About The Kelley Center

Awakening growth and resilience!

The Kelley Center was founded based on the premise that people who have experienced psychological trauma can heal, grow, and thrive.

Many children and adults have experienced trauma due to abuse, neglect, violence, natural disasters, racism, war, and more. These traumatic experiences can cause feelings of poor self worth, anxiety, depression, lack of motivation, poor executive functioning, addictions, eating disorders, and a host of other problems.

At the Kelley Center, we take a holistic approach to healing trauma. We believe that trauma is not something to overcome and forget about, but is something that can empower us and facilitate resilience.

What is a Traumaversary?

The Body Mind Connection

Wheat Field

Traumaversaries

When a person has experienced a traumatic experience, the memory is stored within the brain and body so that when the anniversary of the event comes around, the person remembers the feelings associated at that event. This is referred to as a traumaversary.

Body Mind Connection

Have you ever been reminded of someone because of a smell? Or walked by someplace that a happy memory occurred and felt joyous? This is the body's way of remembering. The same is true for traumatic memories. Our memories can be triggered by a touch, a smell, a sound, etc. When that happens you can be overcome by feelings of fear, dread, sadness, anger, etc. many of the same feelings you had experienced during the original traumatic event.

How to deal with a traumaversary

Awareness-stay aware of the upcoming event and your feelings associated with it.

Plan-make a plan for how you want to spend the traumaversary. Do you want to distract yourself from it? Or Do you want to honor or remember it in a special way?

Talk about it-talk to a trusted friend or therapist about your feelings.

Time does help

Remember that this will pass. Usually the feelings from traumaversaries subside within a couple of weeks. However, if you are having trouble rebounding from the event please seek the services of a licensed therapist.
